I want to continue on from my previous post: Importance of having antispyware/malware with antivirus software – with part 2.

Today, I got another virus emailand decided to put the various antivirus software and antispyware software to the test.

So, here are screenshots of the email and virus attachment:

So firstly, I scanned the document.exe file with Avast! (fully updated) and it found NO THREAT (!).

Secondly, I scanned it with Malwarebytes (full updated) and it also found NO THREAT (!).

Thirdly, I fired up my virtual computer with Microsoft Security Essentials installed and during the copy from my physical computer to the virtual machine, Microsoft Security Essentials picked it up straight away:

Lastly, I fired up my second virtual machine (I created two virtual machines for this exercise) which has AVG Anti-Virus 2011 Free Edition installed and it also picked up on the virus during the copy of the .zip file from my physical machine to the virtual machine:

So, as you can see from this test, while Malwarebytes picked up the Trojan from my original post (Importance of having antispyware/malware with antivirus software), it didn’t pick up this virus this time.

Avast! didn’t pick it up either.

Microsoft Security Essentials and AVGFree both picked this up straight away.

So, the score so far:

SoftwareThreats detected
Threats missed
Avast! 2
Microsoft Security Essentials1

NOTE:AVGFree and Microsoft Security Essentials were not used in the first virus test post

Both AVG and Malwarebytes are free. However, if you found this post helpful and want to buy either the AVG or Malwarebytes paid versions (which gives additional protection), please consider buying it using the links on this page. It costs you nothing more but ThisisHelfpful.com will recieve a referral fee for your purchase. This is money that will be used to keep this site going and to make it even better.

UPDATE 10th April 2011:

– Read Part 3 of this post using another virus email and it’s findings here: Importance of having antispyware/malware with antivirus software – Part 3

UPDATE 11th April 2011:

It’s now three days since this post was created and when I first got this Trojan email and it came back into my inbox today. I ran a scan again with Malwarebytes and Avast and both still hast *NOT* picked it up! That’s three days ago so I’m surprised they both haven’t picked it up yet. AVGFree and Microsoft Security Essentials has picked it up fine still though (as they did originally three days ago).
