Well, I got another virus email today. They are similar to the last two I posted before (Part 1 and Part 2), however the result from scanning the file with Avast, AVGFree, Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials was slightly different.
So, here are screenshots of the email and virus attachment:
So firstly, I scanned the document.exe file with Avast! (fully updated) and it found NO THREAT (again!!)
Secondly, I scanned it with Malwarebytes (full updated) and it found a Trojan 🙂
Thirdly, I fired up my virtual computer with Microsoft Security Essentials installed and during the copy from my physical computer to the virtual machine, Microsoft Security Essentials picked it up straight away 🙂
Lastly, I fired up my second virtual machine with AVG Anti-Virus 2011 Free Editioninstalled and it found NO THREAT (!)
So, as you can see from this test:
- Malwarebytes picked up the Trojan
- Avast! didn’t pick up the Trojan
- AVGFree didn’t pick up the Trojan
- Microsoft Security Essentials picked up the Trojan
So, the score so far (from part 1 and part 2):
|Software||Threats detected||Threats missed|
|Microsoft Security Essentials||2|
So far, Avast! is really letting me down here (to make it worth, I actually run Avast! on my physical machine!). Microsoft Security Essentials on the other hand has picked up both Trojan’s from this test and the last two. However, AVG and Malwarebytes has managed to miss one each now.
Let’s see what tomorrow brings and whether I get anymore dodgy virus emails in my Inbox.
Both AVG and Malwarebytes are free. However, if you found this post helpful and want to buy either the AVG or Malwarebytes paid versions (which gives additional protection), please consider buying it using the links on this page. It costs you nothing more but ThisisHelfpful.com will recieve a referral fee for your purchase. This is money that will be used to keep this site going and to make it even better.
